Leaders hold space. 
Say that to a non-native English speaker and you will quickly be reminded how confusing English metaphors can be. 
Holding space is an oxymoron, which nicely captures the unique challenge of developing it as a skill set. 


Your shower holds space. 
When you shower, you are offered a defined container to perform a function (cleaning yourself).
You also inevitably have your most genius ideas as you casually lather on the soap. 


This is the duality of holding space. 
While your shower holds space for something concrete (washing) it also allows for the unexpected to emerge (your genius).
As a leader, your job is to hold space in both capacities.
