Listening

Listening is not a passive action.
Listening requires actively tuning out other processes which compete for limited resources in your brain.
This is why you unconsciously turn the music down while driving and you are lost; your brain has finite capacity for focus.

This is also why you can have a better conversation sitting down over a coffee than you can while sprinting.
Beyond simply being out of breath, the exertion of sprinting on your motor cortex will override your executive function’s ability to process abstract thoughts.
If you are looking to improve your listening, start with the environment in which you are attempting to accomplish the task.
