Flow

The state of flow is an under-considered concept in the world of work.
In sport, athletes and coaches constantly optimize training to maximize the conditions for flow.
Artists will build their life around immersing themselves into a flow state.

In contrast, the world of work approaches a flow state as more of a happy accident than a condition for success.
The cognitive state of flow is one of two functions most highly correlated with the experience of flourishing.
As a leader your ability to drive team performance is built on a foundation of each member’s level of flourishing.

The equation for creating flow is not complicated.
In a task, your ability and level of challenge need to find a balance.
Too much challenge and anxiety emerges; too much ability and boredom takes over..

Flow is more than just being “in the zone.”
It is an articulation of demonstrating one’s strengths through a task that becomes immersive and meaningful.
Accomplishing a task feels good; leveraging what makes you uniquely great at a level that stimulates flow is a peak human experience.
