Effort
As a leader you are frequently managing disparities in effort.
You are managing low application of effort that yields subpar performance.
More challenging, you are managing a high application of effort that lacks skill or direction, also yielding subpar performance.
Managing effort is challenging because it quickly becomes a very personal exploration.
It is challenging for an individual to accurately quantify effort, as their only credible comparative data is themselves.
Often the work of managing effort, as a leader, quickly becomes an exercise in exploring blind spots.
Enabling someone to see something which they previously could not (a blind spot) is immensely impactful work.
When doing so in the realm of effort and performance, you have two key points to leverage: data and patience.
Identify the data that signifies progression of performance, and remind yourself to be patient (continuously).
You are, after all, asking someone to explore effort in the realm of what they have never before considered.
Asking them to simply try harder, immediately, at understanding their effort is unlikely to be effective.
