Direction

Your natural habit is to find an approach to communication that is effective and then repeat it.
Perhaps you like making a clear point and then allowing the audience to engage with their questions and perspectives.
You also might prefer sharing some context and giving the audience the “Why” before landing the point.

Both approaches (and dozens of variations in between) can be effective.
The key factor is to consider the direction of your communication.
Your approach towards your direct reports will differ from speaking to the executive team.

There are three principles that can help:
When communicating upward: get to the point and have the context ready when asked for.
When communicating down: start with some context before landing on the point.

The principle that always applies: succinctness is effective at all times.
