Competitive
If you are a competitive person, you have likely learned to dress it up or mask it in some capacity.
While teams thrive on competition, you quickly dodge being labelled as competitive.
We collapse two separate concepts: being competitive and winning.
Competitiveness is a character trait; winning is an outcome.
Your mind unconsciously associates being labelled as “competitive” as actually being labelled as “winning at the cost of others.”
This association exists because in many cases the two concepts can coexist; but the relationship is not intrinsically causal.
This is where great leaders stand apart.
They acknowledge and bring their own competitiveness while stoking it within their team.
They motivate, engage, and find ways to create tenacity around performing and developing.
The end result does not define competitiveness.
If being competitive is your strength, own it.
Be thoughtful around doing so in a manner which brings out the best in those around you.
