Basics
It is easy (more fun) to focus on the higher level skills of performance.
In sport this is the highlight reel moment or the championship winning feat.
In business this is strategy, complex organizational dynamics, or multi-day cross-functional team optimization sessions.
It is less appealing to focus on the basics.
It means taking the time to find what you do well, and do it great.
It is ensuring that your team consistently delivers what your customer relies on you for today before dazzling them with something novel and unexpected next month.
The metaphor for an athlete is to do one good thing every time they step on the field.
For a leader it is reinforcing trust or building clarity in small increments, day in and out.
A team all doing one good thing will outweigh one player attempting to pull off something incredible.
Focusing on consistency is less exciting than the novel or highlight-reel action.
Being consistent at the basics will create a stronger foundation for the spectacular when the moment arises.
